What is Forward Deployed Engineer?

Most software is built once and sold many times. Enterprise AI and data products rarely work that way, because every customer’s data, systems, and rules are different. A forward deployed engineer closes that gap from inside the customer’s team. They map the sources the product needs, connect systems, write the glue code and configuration that make the product fit, and define with the customer what a successful result looks like. Unlike a consultant, an FDE ships what they learn back into the product, so the next customer needs less custom work.

For AI products, most of an FDE’s time goes into understanding the customer’s data: which fields mean what, where the exceptions are, which keys join two tables, and which records the business treats differently. That work repeats for every customer unless the mappings, preparation rules, and success criteria are recorded somewhere they can be reused. Data onboarding and AI-ready data describe the state that work is trying to reach; an FDE is the person who gets a customer there the first time.

Frequently asked questions

What does a forward deployed engineer do?

An FDE works inside a customer's environment to connect the product to that customer's data and systems, define what a good result looks like, and feed what they learn back into the product.

How is an FDE different from a solutions engineer or a consultant?

A solutions engineer supports the sale and a consultant delivers a project. An FDE stays through delivery and changes the product itself, so later customers need less custom work.

Why do AI companies hire forward deployed engineers?

AI products depend on each customer's data, and that data is never the same twice. An FDE does the data understanding and preparation that a generic product cannot do on its own.
